Are Women Really Better Drivers Than Men? What the Battle of the Sexes is Doing to Your Auto Insurance Rates

You know, you’d think in this day and age we’d have left the battle of the sexes far behind us. Women have the vote. Men are stay home parents. Both sexes are steadily climbing the corporate ladder. But statistics show us that men and women still aren’t getting even treatment out there-especially when it comes to their auto insurance rates.

Men, who would you say is the better driver-you or your significant other? Now, most men will tell you that their wife/girlfriend isn’t a bad driver. (At least, they do if they don’t want to be sleeping on the couch!) Most of them aren’t lining up to give their girl their keys and hop in the passenger seat, however. Why? Because when asked most men will tell you they’re the better driver.

It’s true that women are more likely than men to be involved in fender benders or thoughtlessly scrape the undercarriage of the car because of a moment of inattention. Sorry ladies, the numbers don’t lie. Statistics also show that, on the whole, men and women are equally likely to be involved in an accident that would require them to file auto insurance claims.

If that’s the case, then why are women paying so much less for their auto insurance rates?

Because while women are more likely to be involved in fender benders, men are more likely to go all out. Statistically speaking, men go all out when they’re involved in a crash. The property damage tends to be significantly greater, and there are more likely to be fatalities. Studies also show that men are by far more aggressive drivers than women (as a general rule). That puts them in a high risk category, and auto insurance companies really, really hate that.

Since fatal accidents are by far more extensive and expensive for your auto insurance company, they’re going to charge you more in premiums to help balance out the difference. Studies show that while young women coming off their parents’ auto insurance policies are likely to watch their insurance rates fly up by approximately 50%, young men of the same age and the same driving history will watch their rates go up 100%-just because, statistically speaking, they’re more likely to cost their insurance companies more money.

So who’s the better driver? Sorry guys. Statistics are giving this one to the ladies.
